Iowa up to 9 high-path avian flu cases following detections in Guthrie and Hamilton Counties

Two more cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza are being reported in Iowa.

Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig says a commercial layer facility in Guthrie County in central Iowa and a commercial turkey facility in Hamilton County in north-central Iowa are the latest infections.

“We are now at nine cases total in the state of Iowa, two backyard flocks (and) seven commercial operations.”

He says they are following well established response procedures in part to minimize trade disruptions.

“Countries will look at this situation in the U.S. differently. Some will only look at states that have or don’t have confirmed cases, others will look within states and look at the counties that are impacted versus others. It really does depend on that trading relationship.”

Naig says USDA has a team focused solely on trade that is helping states impacted by avian flu maintain a favorable export status.
