Iowa to scale up soil health efforts

Iowa continues to promote soil health practices that improve water quality.

State Ag Secretary Mike Naig says they started the initiative six years ago. “You look at the fact that before the Nutrient Reduction Strategy, we’re talking maybe 10,000 acres of cover crops. Today, we’re pushing three million acres.”

Naig says the state is planning to scale up efforts moving forward. “Bioreactors and saturated buffers, in the next three years we’ll build more of those practices than we’ve built to date.”

He says these efforts will help create jobs and economic development opportunities.
