Iowa sees decline in HPAI cases

Cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza have slowed in Iowa.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig tells Brownfield, “We are several weeks from our last confirmed case. That’s great news. Every day that we can go without a new case is a good day.”

He says poultry producers have ramped up biosecurity efforts to help curb farm-to-farm spread and it’s now needed year-round.

“The thing about biosecurity is that you can always do a little bit better every day,” Naig said. “I think that’s what we’re seeing happening across the industry.”

The 2022 surge of HPAI was the largest foreign animal disease outbreak in U.S. history.
