Iowa pig farmer concerned about Prop 12

An Iowa pork producer is concerned about possible ramifications of Proposition 12.

Corey Hillebo is a contract grower near Polk City in central Iowa.

“It does worry me (because it could) change the way that hogs are grown and how pork is consumed and distributed across the country.”

Prop 12 is a California ballot initiative that establishes standards for livestock confinement and ag groups including the National Pork Producers Council and American Farm Bureau are challenging the law in the Supreme Court.

“It’s concerning that one state has so much pull, to the media and to the industry.”

Oral arguments were held earlier this month and the Supreme Court has until the end of its term in June 2023 to render a decision.
