Iowa hog farmer dealing with pig shortage

A wean-to-finish hog operation in Iowa is dealing with a regional pig shortage.

Bob Hemesath of Decorah says the market is good.

“But it’s been hard to find pigs. There’s been a lot of PRRS this winter and it’s really hurt the numbers, so there’s a fair amount of barns sitting empty.”

Hemesath tells Brownfield he’s having to buy off the spot market.

“We normally don’t have to, but that’s just the way it goes. And they’re in high demand.”

The latest Hogs and Pigs Report from the USDA shows the largest sow reductions in Iowa, Minnesota, and Missouri.
