Organizers say the Iowa FFA Convention will be in-person later this month after the pandemic forced its cancellation a year ago.

Iowa FFA president Mickayla McGill of the Knoxville FFA Chapter says membership suffered because of a lack of gatherings in 2020.

“We knew we wanted to do something to get members involved and get them out of the classroom. While connecting them virtually is fine, it still doesn’t have the same impact (because) there’s not that personal connection that you get and excitement from seeing people on stage getting recognized for accomplishments.”

She tells Brownfield there are several COVID-related restrictions and policies to help keep FFA students and convention staff as safe as possible, including a mask mandate and social distancing practices.

There will also be limited capacity at the Iowa Events Center where the convention takes place April 18th through the 20th.

“One of the reasons that we are in Des Moines this year is because it has such a large facility. We have the ability to spread people out and still have a good-sized attendance, while keeping everybody safe.”
