Iowa farmer hopeful for promising growing season

A southwest Iowa farmer says he’s optimistic about the upcoming spring planting season.

Justin Ewalt of Fremont County says winter moisture has recharged the soil profile. “After harvest was over, I think everybody’s main concern was weather,” he said. “We were very dry. Now we have slipped into the new year here and things have been a 180. We’ve been pretty wet.”

He tells Brownfield some input costs have improved. “Fertilizer has come down a little bit from a year ago,” Ewalt said. “It’s still record prices as far as if you went back 20 or 30 years, but significantly lower than it was a year ago. That’s promising.”

But Ewalt says diesel prices remain high.
