Iowa farmer anticipates long harvest season, thanks to derecho

A central Iowa farmer anticipates a challenging harvest season, thanks to the derecho wind event.

Seth Gerlach, who farms near Nevada, says they were hit hard.

“We got a pretty good lick by the derecho.  It came in and laid a pretty good chunk of our corn down,” Gerlach says. “It didn’t snap much off—it’s all starting to come back up—so the insurance says we’re going to have to go out there and pick it all off.”

Gerlach says they’ve ordered reels for their corn heads.  But he says it could be a long fall.

“We won’t know until we get out there in the middle of the fields if we’re going to have to deadhead one way on a bunch of stuff or cut across it opposite of the row. It will just be slow going and we’ll have to do what we can.”

The Gerlachs also lost two grain bins. Seth says they’re planning to bag their crops this fall.
