Iowa corn, soybean ratings drop again

The condition ratings for Iowa’s corn and soybean crops dropped again over the past week. Both crops continue to show the effects of the state’s expanding drought and the recent derecho storm.

45% of corn is in good to excellent condition, 5% less than last week, with 71% of the crop dented, 1 week ahead of average, and 11% mature, six days faster than normal. Some producers have been cleared to mow or disc corn damaged by the derecho.

50% of soybeans are called good to excellent, a drop of 6%, with 96% at the pod setting stage, 4 days ahead of usual, and 29% coloring, the highest percentage of beans at that state by August 30th since 2012.

Just 16% of Iowa’s pastures and rangeland are in good to excellent shape and some producers have begun supplemental hay feeding because of those deteriorating conditions.
