Iowa Corn chairman: Treat corn fairly in MFP process

Corn growers were upset last year when the USDA only provided a penny per bushel for corn in trade mitigation payments.

Iowa Corn Growers Association chairman Mark Recker says corn needs to be treated more fairly this time around.

“Just look at the impact from lost distillers grains markets in China—that’s been an issue—and potential exports of ethanol going into China. Both huge, huge, products made from corn,” Recker says.

Trade mitigation payments will not cover the losses that corn growers have sustained, he says.

“The losses sustained from lost trade and export markets go far beyond what the government could provide in this case. But it can help sustain producers when they meet with their bankers and try to meet their other financial obligations.”

Recker farms near Arlington in northeast Iowa.
