Iowa corn and soybean planting benefit from recent heat wave

Iowa farmers made significant planting progress last week.

The USDA says producers planted 43 percent of the state’s expected corn crop on the week to reach 57 percent overall. Corn planting is two weeks behind last year and nine days behind the five-year-average.

Thirty-four percent of the soybean crop is planted, just over two weeks behind last year and one week behind the average pace.

Oat planting is at 89 percent with 58 percent emerged, one week behind average.

USDA says livestock conditions were good as they were turned out from muddy feedlots to pasture, although feed stocks were low.
