Iowa-based agronomist hopeful for better field conditions this spring

A Channel technical agronomist says she’s optimistic soil moisture will be fully recharged for the start of the planting season.

Lauren Botine, who is based in western Iowa, tells Brownfield the weather pattern in her area is much improved.  “There’s been a significant amount of snowfall this winter,” she says.  “That equates to more soil moisture eventually when it melts.”

She says unlike recent years, farmers may have to navigate wetter field conditions this spring.  “Hopefully folks are getting a plan in place for any nitrogen that they need to apply in the spring,” she says.  “Whether it be anhydrous or liquid and having to dodge rainfalls and wet fields.”

Botine says farmers should take some time to fine-tune equipment before planting gets into full swing.”
