Iowa Ag Secretary focused on GM corn ban during recent trade mission to Mexico

Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig is troubled by the Mexican government moving toward a phase out of genetically modified corn.

Naig recently returned from a trade mission to Mexico and tells Brownfield the GM corn ban was a significant focus.

“That would ultimately result in a disruption to us getting corn into Mexico. Now it’s not resulting in disruptions today, but as we look to the future and look to seed companies bringing new innovations to the American farmer, this is a great challenge.”

In late 2020, Mexico’s president issued a decree to enact a ban on genetically modified corn for human consumption by 2024.

Naig says the Mexican government is not considering the science, but he’s optimistic the largest importer of U.S. corn in the world will come around.

“We are very united with our livestock growers, livestock producers, (and) feed manufacturers in Mexico (who) see this as a challenge as well. We are united in our resolve to work on this on both sides of the border.”

He’s encouraging the U.S. Trade Representative and USDA to continue working with their Mexican counterparts toward a solution.
