Iowa ag leader says Trump’s China strategy is ‘on the right track’

There are many in the ag industry who disagree with the way President Trump is addressing trade issues with China. They argue that Trump should have stuck with the WTO complaint process to resolve those issues.

But others, like Iowa farmer Ray Gaesser, a former president of the American Soybean Association, continue to support Trump’s strategy on China.

“I really do think he’s on the right track. The WTO process just has not worked for China,” Gaesser says. “I think it just came down to, we had to do something. Do we like it? No. Does it make us nervous? Yes. But we couldn’t continue the way we were.”

President Trump is expressing optimism about reaching a deal with China. But some analysts say substantial hurdles remain in the way of a deal before a 90-day trade truce ends in early March, bringing with it higher tariffs on 200 billion dollars worth of Chinese imports.
