A group of Des Moines area business leaders traveled into rural Iowa Thursday to learn more about water quality improvement efforts.

Members of the Greater Des Moines Partnership and Capital Crossroads participated in the event, which was hosted by NEW Coop, a farmer-owned cooperative based in Fort Dodge.

“It was an opportunity to let two groups get together, that typically wouldn’t cross paths, to discuss common issues between stakeholders, both upstream and downstream,” says Dan Dix, general manager of NEW Coop.

Dix says the discussion included agronomy and fertilizer practices being used by farmers.

“You know, all the decisions farmers have to make in a fertility management plan,” he says “It also gave them a chance to look at some of the equipment and technology involved today in production agriculture.”

Dix, who is also president of Agriculture’s Clean Water Alliance, says other conservation and water quality improvement practices were also covered.

“These types of events give us the opportunity to share our story—share our message—that we are doing a lot of things today, as an ag retailer as well as a producer, to help improve the situation at hand.”

The Iowa Soybean Association helped coordinate the event.
