International Dairy Foods Association advocates for sufficient dairy aid

The International Dairy Foods Association is advocating for sufficient assistance to help the dairy industry during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

CEO Michael Dykes says the association projects losses of $5 to $10 billion over the first six months of the outbreak.

“Roughly about half of the milk volume goes to food service, and overnight we saw a loss of the food service business by and large with the closing of the schools and all the restaurants.”

He tells Brownfield retail demand initially spiked, resulting in the dairy supply chain having to pivot even though milk supplies remain plentiful.

“Make sure that our dairy processors, especially those that were heavy on the food service side, could continue to have working capital to stay in business. And to make sure that we had government purchases of food for the nearly 36 million unemployed Americans that are food insecure.”

Dykes says government aid has mostly come in the form of announcements, and it’s time to get real help into the hands of dairy farmers.
