Insect and disease pressure in the Dakotas and Minnesota

Late season disease and insect pressure is emerging in parts of the Upper Midwest.

Rick Swenson with Peterson Farms Seed says aphids are a problem along the western side of Minnesota.

“A lot of fields getting sprayed on the Minnesota side. Some on the South Dakota and North Dakota side, but not as many. Kind of scattered here and there, more pockets.”

He tells Brownfield white mold is appearing in soybeans.

“We’ve had some cooler (temperatures), heavy dews, and a little more clouds and not as much wind here this month of August, and especially on those pivots we’re checking for white mold on the soybeans right now.”

Swenson says dew is being found on the plants as late as one in the afternoon, and crop diseases thrive in that environment.
