INFB Health Plan coverage began in January, offering members affordable options

More than 800 Hoosiers signed up for Indiana Farm Bureau Health Plans in January, the first month coverage was available.

Patrick Williams is the manager of INFB Health Plans.

“We went live January 1st and are seeing a great number of participation from our membership,” he says. “We ended up binding 860 health plans, which means we have 2,700 Hoosiers that are being covered at the moment. We’re also seeing an 80 percent application approval rate and we’re very happy with the early production.”

The specialized health plans were provided after more than a year of research to give farmers a more affordable option.

He says INFB wanted to offer plans for sole proprietors because many members don’t qualify for other marketplace subsidies because they are sole proprietors.

“The only option they had previously was an ACA plan which may not be financially possible or the network is too small to satisfy their healthcare needs so they often ran the risk of not having insurance because of those reasons,” he says. “We wanted to offer health plans to sole proprietors.”

Williams anticipates that that number of plan holders will continue to grow.

“This is something new to our membership so we’re still getting the word and letting everybody know about the various different plans,” he says. “We continue to see our submissions for applications grow as well so we anticipate that number to continue to grow throughout the year. Hoosiers and farm bureau members can have a health plan throughout the year and not worry about missing a window or having a special enrollment period.”

Of the initial 860 plan holders, the breakdown of coverage included 716 traditional health plans, including individual and family plans, 21 Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, and 123 dental and vision plans.
