Indiana farmers discuss issues with Duvall

A group of farmers in Indiana remains concerned about the lack of available workers.

Indiana Farm Bureau President Randy Kron says, “Everybody is having challenges and there’s no easy fix to it right now.”

Kron tells Brownfield his members had a chance to speak with American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall recently at several stops, and labor was always the first issue that came up. “Whether you’re a livestock farmer or we were at Leibering Dimension which is timber hardwood, and it’s about labor, and trying to secure a legal, reliable workforce is, it’s a huge challenge.”

Kron says one of their members recently could not find a replacement for a long-time employee who retired, so the family bought a larger planter and they’ll try to do the fieldwork without replacing the employee.

The Indiana farmers also echoed some other common issues. “Input costs and supply chains was one that just everywhere we went, they were talking about. Weather is always a concern.”

He says Hooser farmers also discussed the availability of herbicides and fertilizer, as well as the cost of those inputs with AFBF President Duvall.
