Indiana corn and soybeans need rain

Indiana corn and soybean fields are showing signs of stress as farmers hope for more rainfall.  USDA reporters say the state’s rainfall varied from zero to just over 6/10ths of an inch last week, and nowhere near the amount of rain needed.

Crop conditions worsened with only 48% of the state’s corn now in good to excellent condition, and 50% of Indiana’s soybeans in good to excellent condition. 

The dry weather did help farmers with hay and wheat harvesting, as 40% of first-crop alfalfa is in, and 39% of the non-alfalfa second crop has been harvested.

Only 46% of pastures are now in good to excellent condition.
