Indiana Conservation Reserve Enhancement program awarded $500,000

The Indiana Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program was awarded $500,000 as part of a legal settlement that was stewarded in part by the Indiana Wildlife Federation.

The money will be used to increase the number of soil conservation practices and improve water quality in watersheds across the state.

The program seeks to reduce pollution and improve water quality in targeted watersheds near the Wabash and White Rivers. Program participants remove cropland from agricultural production and convert land to native grasses, trees, and other vegetation for at least 14 years.

CREP is a partnership between the USDA, Farm Service Agency, and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture.

The funding comes from American Electric Power under a legal settlement with the EPA, eight states, and 13 citizens groups. The ISDA says the settlement included an agreement by AEP to invest $3.5 million to improve air quality and reduce pollution in Indiana through various projects.
