Indiana Ag Law Foundation hopes to help farmers in estate, succession planning

Farm succession planning is a critical part of any agricultural operation.

For its sixth year, the Indiana Agricultural Law Foundation is hosting an estate and succession planning for the family farm event.

John Shoup director of Indiana Agricultural Law Foundation says estate and succession planning is something that impacts every farm in Indiana.

“Something is going to happen with the farm and there’s going to be transition, whether that be to the next generation or maybe it will be sold,” he says. “Recognizing this we wanted to arm farmers and landowners with tools to help in this process.”

He tells Brownfield it can be tough for families to have that conversation, but it’s necessary.

“The more planning that farmers do ensures that their wishes will be honored and that they will have input into what’s going to happen to the family farm,” he says.

Attendees will learn about land value considerations in succession planning, agricultural estate planning basics, options for getting new and begging farmers, and more.

The event is July 30 at the Indiana Farm Bureau headquarters in downtown Indianapolis. Registration ends July 23.
