Illinois Soybean Growers working to extend biodiesel tax incentive

The current biodiesel tax incentive for B10 and higher blends in Illinois is set to expire next year, but farmer members of the Illinois Soybean Association are working to renew and increase it.

Vice Chairman Ron Kindred of Atlanta tells Brownfield they are trying to be proactive.

“We are wanting to ramp that up to a B20 blend or higher to qualify for that incentive to tray and push higher blends. It is a win for the environment, it’s a win for farmers, and it is a win for Illinois because of the amount of biodiesel we produce.”

Kindred says most blends being delivered to farms and at the pump are B11, but if their efforts to extend the incentive fail, “We are afraid it then goes back to B-zero, which would be detrimental to farmers and the biodiesel industry in Illinois.”

He says moving forward, protecting biodiesel, and promoting higher blends are of utmost importance.

Brownfield interviewed Kindred at the 2022 Commodity Classic in New Orleans.
