Illinois officials stress safety with transportation of ag chemicals

A recent accident involving anhydrous ammonia has Illinois ag officials stressing the importance of safety when transporting ag chemicals.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture and the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association created an anhydrous ammonia safety video that is being shared after an incident involving a tractor hauling the chemical sent more than 30 people to the hospital in Beach Park, Illinois last week.

John Rebholz, Director of Safety with the chemical association says,

“I know with this season upon us and with wet conditions across the state of Illinois everyone is going to be a little bit rushed, but that is typically when we start to see a lot of farm accidents. The biggest thing is to slow down, take your time and be sure that you are wearing the proper personal protective equipment.”

The video outlines safety procedures for farmers when handling ag chemicals and encourages drivers to use caution around slow-moving vehicles.
