Illinois farmers say winter wheat is looking good

Three Illinois farmers agree that a mild winter has their winter wheat crops looking good so far.

During a Double Crop Farmers Forum hosted by the Illinois Wheat Association and Illinois Soybean Association, Illinois Wheat Association President Danny Rubin of Shobonier says..

“Everything looks good, as long as nothing happens, we will be applying our first pass of nitrogen probably early February or as soon as the ground freezes up.”

Dale Wehmeyer of Mascoutah says they walked their fields this past week.

“Depending on planting date and variety we have some that is very thick, and we’ve got 6 or 7 tillers on them which is more than we really like to see.”

David Justison of Hillsboro says he is cautiously optimistic for a good wheat crop this year.

“What I’ve found in the past though is when the wheat looks really good in the winter time it is time to buy hail insurance.”

These farmers were the top three winners in the Illinois Winter Wheat Yield Contest last season with Justison leading the way with 126 bushels per acre, followed by Rubin at 124 bpa and Wehmeyer with 119 bpa.
