Illinois farmers predict harvest start dates

Ron Kindred and Randy DeSutter

A pair of Illinois farmers say harvest will start in about 2 weeks on their farms.

Randy DeSutter of Woodhull, President of the Illinois Corn Growers Association, planted all of his corn first this year.

“I am thinking the week of September 13th we might start. We planted some corn on April 5th and 6th so some of it is starting to mature and dry down. It just makes you nervous since we have had some big wind events over the years, you kind of want to get it our because it really doesn’t count until it is in the bin.”

Ron Kindred of Atlanta who serves as Vice Chairman for the Illinois Soybean Association tried planting all of his soybeans first this year.

“We planted half of them first last year and they made 10 to 15 bushels per acre more than the ones planted in May. I thought they would be turning by now, but they are still pretty green. We have had a lot of rain and good weather. It looks like we will be doing corn first, looking at between two and three weeks when we get started.”

DeSutter and Kindred made their comments during a Brownfield visual radio series at the 2021 Farm Progress Show- which can be viewed under Brownfield TV on the home page of this site.
