Illinois farmer’s new year goal: “Just hold on”

After five years of tight margins for her operation, an Illinois farmer says she has one goal for 2021.

“Oh gosh, hold on. Just hold on. That’s about all I really want to do.”

Illinois Corn Growers Association At-Large Director Kate Danner was expecting another poor year for farm profitability, but says things are looking up for the 2021 season.

“I am walking into the cheapest crop I have put in for the last five years, so it is kind of nice knowing there is going to be more money in the bank, but I was really penciling in for another year of a downturn.”

The Aledo, Illinois corn and soybean farmers says prepaying for all of her inputs could really pay off this year.

“I think the reason we are seeing this is because we had really low inputs and prices are just now catching up. I talked to my fertilizer salesman on Friday and he said that dry is up $100 a ton compared to what I paid for it in September.”

Danner says she remains cautiously optimistic as grain prices keep climbing, wondering when they will cap.
