Illinois farmer waiting for later harvest, expects below average yields

A central Illinois farmer says long dry spells and extreme heat this growing season will keep yields below average.

Jim Reed of Deland tells Brownfield, “Scouting and local crop yield tours have shown us to be 20-25 bushels per acre below last year. We are seeing tip back on the ears at 2 to 2.5 inches where it has just aborted the outer ends.”

He says they are at least two weeks away from harvest having planting most of their corn and soybeans in mid-May. And corn moisture testing doesn’t have him in any hurry.

“In my neighborhood, hand shelled at about 32 is the driest I have heard.”

Reed was recently elected Chairman of the Illinois Corn Marketing Board.
