I-states “made for carbon sequestration”

The director of farmer and retailer services for Truterra sees great carbon storage potential in Midwestern fields.

Mariah Murphy says soils in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana are made for carbon sequestration.

“Those are typically where the farmers are getting a higher sequestration rate, that is where they are seeing a higher payout. So I think that also is drawing farmers to open their eyes a little bit to these opportunities.”

She tells Brownfield many farmers in the I-states are already using conservation practices.

“So for them to be able to just bolt this on to what they are already doing I think is also what’s drawing them in, because they’re already doing these things so they can join into the benefits.”

Murphy says the combination of soil texture, climate, a long growing season, and a high baseline of organic matter make the I-states well positioned to sequester carbon.

Truterra, the sustainability business of Land O’Lakes, recently closed enrollment for its 2022 carbon program.
