HPAI confirmed in Ohio

The Ohio Department of Agriculture has reported its first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza since January.

More than 1.3 million birds will be depopulated at a commercial layer flock in Union County to contain the spread of the virus.

Research Analyst Lance Zimmerman with Rabo AgriFinance tells Brownfield the majority of HPAI outbreaks this year have occurred on turkey and egg-laying farms.

“The case counts still remain below past years, and so we’re hoping that trend continues, but we also recognize that seasonally we’re in the period of time where those cases tend to ramp up,” he says.

He says the supply and affordability of turkeys through the Thanksgiving holiday remained strong.

In the past month, USDA says 24 states have reported the virus in commercial and backyard flocks.
