House Ag Committee members host farm bill listening session in southeast Minnesota

House Agriculture Subcommittee Chair Cheri Bustos hosted a farm bill listening session in southeast Minnesota Monday.

The Illinois Democrat joined Minnesota Congresswoman Angie Craig on the Peterson Farm near Northfield.  Minnesota Soybean Growers Association president Bob Worth told both House Ag Committee members he would like to see the overall pool of money increased in the next farm bill.

“I think it should go all the way from SNAP all the way down through (to) Title I. Because as we all know inflation is hitting us really hard, and I think this is something that we need to take a look at increasing.”

Host farmer Bruce Peterson, a past president of the Minnesota Corn Growers, stressed the importance of crop insurance when marketing grain.

“Marketing is extremely hard, but by taking a decent level of crop insurance, it allows farmers to go ahead and forward sell long before we know what our actual production will be.”

Minnesota Farm Bureau president Dan Glessing and several others participating in the farm bill listening session say they oppose tying crop insurance to conservation practices.
