Hot & humid week helps Wisconsin crops

Hot and humid conditions last week allowed Wisconsin farmers time to wrap up planting and make significant progress on first-crop hay harvesting.

USDA reporters say once Tuesday’s severe thunderstorms rolled though, there were five straight days suitable for fieldwork.

The first cutting of alfalfa is 50% complete, 6 days ahead of last year but 2 days behind the average.  Southeastern and southwestern Wisconsin farmers are farther along with first crop hay cutting.  Some reporters say alfalfa was less developed than usual due to the cold spring, but the quality was good in most areas. The all hay condition was reported 65% in good to excellent condition Corn is 86% emerged and soybeans are 75% emerged, both about a week ahead of average and 20 days ahead of last year.  Ninety percent of Wisconsin’s oats have emerged and 84% of the crop is in good to excellent condition.
