Hopeful signs following USMCA meeting

This week’s USMCA meeting between top trade negotiators of the U.S., Canada and Mexico ended without an official announcement. But Canadian and Mexican officials cited progress in addressing some of the issues that Democrats have raised with the trade deal.

Following the meeting in Washington, Mexico’s undersecretary for North America said, “everything looks like it’s heading in the right direction.”

That comment could be a sign that the three countries are nearing a deal that could win House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s support and pave the way for full ratification.

Bloomberg reports that, even if a deal is reached, the House may not vote on it immediately when it returns from recess next week. The report says a House vote is more likely later in December, or even early next year, with the Senate acting in January.
