Hopeful planting will resume soon

Farmers in the river bottoms near Evansville, Ind. (in Southwest Indiana) continue to be in a holding pattern as a result of last week’s rainfall.  Vanderburgh County farmer Randy Kron says their fields are wet.  “A lot of the rain across the northern part of the state has made the Wabash come up,” he says.  “And the Ohio is coming up, too so it’s halted anything being planted in those areas.”

In addition to last week’s rainfall – cooler temperatures are also causing concern.  “This cold weather has also slowed down emergence,” he says.  “There was a time period, about five days, we would see corn spike through the ground.  But what was planted just before this last rain has really slowed on emergence.”

Kron tells Brownfield he’s a little surprised by the corn that has emerged.  “Most of our stands are pretty decent, unless there was water on it for several days,” he says.  “The stands are pretty good.  But we do have some potholes that we’re going to go back and fill-in.  But it’s surprisingly better than I expected.”

This week’s forecast cause for much warmer temperatures than the state saw last week.
