Hinson introduces flood mitigation bill

A new bill in the U.S. House would help improve flood and drought mitigation through existing USDA conservation programs.

Iowa Republican Ashley Hinson says the Flood Resiliency and Land Stewardship Act is timely for farmers.

“I’m very cognizant that while 15 years ago we had way too much water, obviously right now we don’t have enough. While we can’t control what the weather does, we can control how prepared we are.”

She tells Brownfield the bill would strengthen USDA’s Regional Conservation Partnership Program to help improve resilience, water quality, and soil health.

“That’s where I see us being able to laser target resources to not only help with conservation, but also help with the mitigation that is necessary on our land.”

Hinson says the bipartisan measure provides resources to prevent damage to crops, property, and homes during a flood event.
