High Court ruling on Prop 12 could arrive anytime

The head of a state Farm Bureau organization says the US Supreme Court could have a decision on California’s Proposition 12 very soon.

Nebraska’s Mark McHargue tells Brownfield, “We’re hearing that any day we could get a ruling, and we think we might have a friendly ruling.”

The measure requires that pork sold in California is raised under strict guidelines and McHargue says that would create market challenges for producers in other states. “It’s just absurd quite frankly that we can have a California law that would tell us producers how to raise our livestock.  That’s just absurd.”

National Pork Producers Council presented oral arguments in October and American Farm Bureau, along with other ag organizations, joined the lawsuit.
