HHD analysts doubt Thursday’s crop report will contain big changes

DTN market analyst Todd Hultman

USDA’s August crop report created an uproar among many farmers who thought the acreage and yield numbers were much too high.

DTN’s Todd Hultman says he doesn’t expect any big changes when the September crop report is released on Thursday.

“I’m concerned that it’s basically going to support numbers similar to what we saw in August,” Hultman says. “The yield estimates might come down a little bit. But from what we’ve seen, it looks like maybe there’s been some improved weather, especially the past 30 days, that has really helped crops come around and do very well.”

Farm Futures’ Bryce Knorr says he’d be surprised if USDA lowers its corn production estimate by much.

“I think there’s a good chance that will happen down the road, particularly with harvested acres. I think it could be as much as 3.7 million lower than USDA’s August estimate,” Knorr says. “But with USDA reports, who knows. We’ve certainly had plenty of surprises from the agency this year.”
