Hay crop coming along nicely in central Iowa

A central Iowa cattle farmer says hay conditions are better than expected.

“The amount of hay we’re going to have this year is twice what we had last year,” Justin Robbins said.

Robbins tells Brownfield favorable weather conditions have helped. “We’re pretty blessed right through here where we are at because we are getting inch rains and people around us are getting anywhere from two-to-four inches of rain pretty frequently.”

He says keeping up on grazing has been a challenge. “The grass is just growing like crazy,” Robbins said. “I think it’s from being so slow the last couple of years and not utilizing all of the fertilizer we had out on it. This year it’s finally able to get to it with the water and pick it up.”

Robbins farms near Scranton in Greene County.
