Harvest soon to be underway in Central Nebraska

A Central Nebraska farmer says he’s on the verge of starting harvest.

Clay Govier tells Brownfield, “I think we’re going to start on some irrigated soybeans next week on some of the early stuff we planted, and then it’s going to be a race to the finish.”

He says irrigated corn is in great shape, but dryland crops suffered this summer. “I don’t think we’re going to have any homerun yields this year.  I think with those hot, dry spells like the one in July during pollination probably took off the top end yield off.  Then August was really dry and pretty stressful to the plant.”

Govier says drought conditions persist but have improved with some rain during the summer.
