Harvest moisture tool helps farmers identify optimum time to combine

Harvest timing is a complex and potentially costly decision for farmers.

Ken O’Brien, U.S. digital platform marketing leader at Corteva, says they’ve developed a free digital resource to help determine the optimum moisture content for harvesting corn and soybeans.

“This balancing act between letting it dry in the field or taking it out and pay to have it dried depending upon the grower’s facilities that they have themselves. Understanding that there can be a lot of variables that impact that as well.”

He tells Brownfield the Granular harvest moisture tool is based on 10 years of aggregate data and is broken down by region across a dozen states.

“If we let a field dry, perhaps what did change about the yield and how did the yield get impacted to a point where it would’ve been more profitable to harvest a higher moisture crop and pay to dry it than to leave it in the field.”

Brownfield states included in the harvest moisture database include Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
