Harvest exceeded low expectations for Nebraska farmer

A Southwest Nebraska farmer says harvest is nearing the finish line.

Andy Jobman tells Brownfield he has about a week left and yields are beating expectations despite the region’s historic drought. “We thought we had some pretty decent corn out there.  We thought we would have some good yields.”

He tells Brownfield he was hoping to hit 260 bushels per acre for some fields. “We’re hitting those underneath irrigation systems and, in some cases, exceeding it. Quite frankly, we needed to exceed those yield targets with how much additional cost that we had this year not just from inflation but from so much irrigation that we had.”

But, Jobman says, dryland crops were a different story with yields 50 percent or worse below the trendline.
