Growers: BeSure not to harm bees

The BeSure campaign, underway for a second year, is meant to help growers keep bees safe from much needed crop insecticides.

Jane DeMarchi with the American Seed Trade Association tells Brownfield Ag News it’s essential growers follow label directions when planting and use advanced seed flow lubricant, “It can help minimize dust during planting. You want to eliminate the flowering plants and weeds in and around the field prior to planting. If you’re doing a foliar application make sure that your sprays are directed away from any flowering plants.”

She says growers need to also follow buffer zones, minimize spray drift and communicate, “Make sure you’re communicating with any beekeepers that are nearby.” DeMarchi says it’s also very important to properly dispose of any treated seed.
