Groups urge USDA oversight of lab-produced meat

A coalition of ag, meat and livestock groups is urging President Trump to ensure the USDA acts as the primary regulatory authority over lab-grown meat products.

In a letter to Trump, the groups accuse the Food and Drug Administration of a “regulatory power grab” in trying to assert jurisdiction over lab-produced meat products. They say if cell-cultured protein companies want to market their products as “meat”, they should have to follow the same rules as everyone else, with oversight from the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The letter is signed by the American Farm Bureau Federation, American Sheep Industry Association, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, National Chicken Council, National Pork Producers Council, National Turkey Federation and North American Meat Institute.
