Group of states sues USDA over SNAP cuts

Michigan and Minnesota are among 14 states, New York City and the District of Columbia suing the USDA over its new work requirements for food stamp recipients. The plaintiffs say the rule would move more than 600-thousand people from the SNAP program which is unlawful as well as “arbitrary, capricious (and) an abuse of discretion.”

Ag Secretary Perdue said in December when the new rule was announced that it would allow able-bodied Americans to re-enter the workforce at a time when there are more job openings than people to fill them.

Now, states can waive the work requirements in areas where unemployment is at least 10% or there are not enough jobs. The new rule is set to take effect in April. Congress rejected a similar proposal in the bipartisan 2018 Farm Bill.
