Great Lakes Seaway providing reliability for ag exports

The Deputy Administrator for the St. Lawrence Seaway says they have not had the same port issues over the past two and a half years as the West Coast.

Craig Middlebrook tells Brownfield, “We have had almost no delays over and above what we’re used to—very, very minor.”

He says overall shipments have been incrementally increasing in the Seaway since 2020 with more containers since the start of the pandemic.

“It’s becoming more prevalent and there’s going to be larger opportunities for containerized cargo beyond just Cleavland next year, Duluth is now in the game, other ports will be online next year,” he explains.

Middlebrook says added investment in infrastructure along the seaway to support ag exports, like with the Delong Company at the Port of Milwaukee, is also helping to improve the ag supply chain.
