Great Lakes funding clears House Appropriations

Funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative next year has been approved by the House Appropriations Committee. Tuesday the committee passed legislation to fully fund the program for $300 million in fiscal year 2018.

President Trump’s proposed budget had zeroed out the program but appropriations committee member John Moolenaar of Michigan pushed for the funding in committee and says he will continue to advocate for the Great Lakes when it comes up to vote before the whole House.

More than 3,000 projects in the 8-state Great Lakes Region, including Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, have been completed since it was established in 2010.

This week the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its last seasonal Lake Erie Algal Bloom forecast, calling for a larger than normal bloom. Researchers say the bloom predictions don’t necessarily correlate to how toxic it is or the risk to public health.
