Gray wolf frustrations aired at Cattle Industry Convention

Concerns about wolf attacks on livestock are being expressed at the Cattle Industry Convention in New Orleans.

Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association director Ashley Kohls says she’s frustrated by the lack of progress in getting the gray wolf removed from the Endangered Species List.

“It feels like we’re two steps forward, one step back, like we’re always on the cusp of having something happen. So the states in the Great Lakes region are continually talking to our state legislators, but there are some folks in the western regions now who are having increased populations of wolves that are now kind of joining onto our narrative.”

She tells Brownfield efforts to delist the wolf have been repeatedly thwarted by Congress.

“We’re going to keep trying, but (we’re not sure) how that’s going to happen. We’re trying to find out if the House has an appetite for something like that. But again, it’s really frustrating for us.”

During the Region III meeting at the Convention, beef industry leaders from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois talked about policy and promotion priorities.

WI:

The Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association is looking at foreign marketing and a possible follow up to a trade mission to South America in 2018.

MO:

The Missouri Cattlemen’s Association is working to remove regulatory burdens and create opportunities for beginning farmers.

IA:

The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is developing a livestock market video that shows the value of the beef industry to rural communities.

IL:

The Illinois Beef Association is targeting consumers in Chicago with checkoff dollars, and is building relationships with newly elected officials including the governor.
