Grassley hears cattle market concerns, priorities at Iowa State Fair

Republican US Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association are continuing their push for the Cattle Price Discovery and Transparency Act.

In a meeting at the Iowa State Fair Monday morning, Senator Grassley said one of the top priorities for the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is getting cattle slaughtered in a timely manner. He tells Brownfield his bill addresses their concern.

“Presently, if you are a cash sale person, you want a negotiated daily price as opposed to contracting,” Grassley said. “Sometimes I’ve had cattle feeders say you get a price today and maybe you can’t deliver for 30 days. The legislation I have it will be required that within 14 days you’d be able to deliver your cattle.”

Grassley says the legislation is out of committee and on the Senate calendar. He says he’s optimistic the bill will receive support, but he’s not confident Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will add it to the agenda.
