Grassley frustrated USTR “just monitoring” Mexico GMO corn ban

A perceived lack of action from the Biden administration over Mexico’s GMO corn ban is drawing criticism.

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley says the U.S. Trade Representative is monitoring the situation.

“So, just monitoring a situation that affects 630 million bushels of corn? That’s not good enough for the family farmer (and) that’s not good enough for me.”

The Iowa Republican says the Mexican government is taking concrete steps to phase out GMO corn and it’s time the USTR gets off the sideline.

“That’s why Senator Ernst and I wrote Ambassador Tai and asked her to formally request dispute settlement consultation under USMCA. In other words, use the rule of law to protect the family farmer.”

And as farmers plan for next year, Grassley says they need some certainty about the number one export market for U.S. corn.
