Grant program created to expand meat processing in Illinois

A new $6 million grant program will help strengthen meat and poultry processing capacity in Illinois.

Through the Meat & Poultry Supply Chain Capital Grant Program offered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, independently owned meat processing companies in the state can receive funding to construct a new facility, or modernize and expand existing facilities or equipment.

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the consumer price index for meats increased by 23 percent from March 2020 to August 2022. The department says that is being driven by limited capacity and lack of competition and this program aims to alleviate those issues while making food products more affordable and creating jobs.

Companies are eligible for grants of $250,000 to $1.5 million with a company match of at least four times the amount awarded. Grants will be issued on a rolling basis and the application process prioritizes companies in underserved and rural areas.

  • Where can we apply for “The Meat & Poultry Supply Chain Capital Grant Program”? I see its offered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity but no further contacts or redirection to start the application.
Can someone kindly advise further on this!
